New study highlights HemoScreen's capability to detect leukocyte abnormalities

A recent study from Turku University Hospital in Finland shows comparable results for all complete blood count (CBC) parameters between the point of care (POC) hematology analyzer HemoScreen™ and the automated Sysmex XN analyzer, notably showing less false white blood cell (WBC) flagging with HemoScreen. HemoScreen, a POC hematology analyzer from PixCell Medical, delivers lab accurate CBC and WBC 5-part differential results in only 5 minutes and from just a drop of blood. The study compared the CBC results of HemoScreen and Sysmex XN from a random sample of 100 routine outpatients and hospital patients, and supported the previous findings of HemoScreen analyzer's good repeatability and analytical stability.

The study is the first one to focus on investigating HemoScreen's capacity to detect leukocyte abnormalities. Previous studies have reported the analyzer to be user friendly and suitable for healthcare units requiring fast results. The ability of an analyzer to detect blood cell abnormalities is of high importance as possible WBC abnormalities should be reviewed by manual microscopy to correctly identify patients with acute hematological diseases. All samples identified as containing abnormal leukocytes by blood smear were flagged correctly by the HemoScreen. The investigators reported 15 samples to be marked as susceptible for leukocyte abnormalities with Sysmex XN, but not with HemoScreen, and ultimately confirmed normal with microscopy.

The study concluded that HemoScreen is safe to use even when detection of leukocyte abnormalities is clinically important, and it reduces the workload in manual review triggered by false abnormal flagging.
