Rising West Nile virus cases highlight the need for diagnostic preparedness

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Human infections have been reported in multiple countries across Europe. Surveillance report by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) indicates that both the number of affected geographic regions and reported human cases have increased during the 2026 transmission season1. Transmission is typically highest between July and September, making this a critical period for awareness, surveillance, and diagnostic preparedness. Currently, there is no licenced vaccine or specific antiviral treatment available for WNV.

Most infections are asymptomatic, but severe disease can occur

Approximately 70-80% of people infected with WNV do not develop symptoms. Those who become ill may experience headache, fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting or rash. However, in a small proportion of cases, the infection may progress to severe and potentially life-threatening disease affecting central nervous system. The World Health Organization advises people living in or returning from an area where WNV circulates to seek medical care without a delay if symptoms such as high fever, rash or neck stiffness occur after a mosquito bite.2

Rapid multiplex molecular testing supports diagnostic preparedness

As WNV activity increases, access to rapid molecular diagnostics is important in supporting timely clinical decision-making and public health surveillance. Aidian offers STANDARD M10 Arbovirus Panel, a multiplex point-of-care Real-Time PCR test that enables simultaneous detection and differentiation of West Nile virus, Dengue virus serotypes 1-4, Zika virus, Chikungunya virus, and Yellow Fever virus from a single patient sample. The assay is designed for rapid, near-patient molecular testing and delivers results in approximately 60 minutes.

Rapid access to multiplex molecular testing can strengthen preparedness for WNV and other emerging arboviral infections.

Aidian distributes the STANDARD M10 system in the Nordics and Benelux area.
