Global actions against AMR – Orion Diagnostica is supporting a study in Africa
The global threat of antibiotic resistance among bacteria is an issue that should concern everyone. Only by joint effort, this alarming trend can be stopped. At Orion Diagnostica we are also joining this important fight against AMR. The CRP tests (CRP, wrCRP, easyCRP) can be excellent tools for reducing the widespread unnecessary usage of antibiotics. When an investigator reached out to Orion Diagnostica and asked us to support a study with our products, we did not hesitate to join.
Dr. Tuula Pelkonen, a researcher from the University of Helsinki, wanted to address a problem she has encountered; how to identify the difference between pneumonia in children caused by viruses or bacteria? She has started a study in Hospital Pediátrico David Bernardino, which is a 300 bed pediatric referral and teaching hospital in Luanda, Angola. The hospital has established two specialized wards for the care of children with pneumonia. Pneumonia can be life-threatening for children if left untreated, but at the same time, it causes significant costs for healthcare as all suspected pneumonia cases need to be addressed with caution. To be able to distinguish between the serious cases needing hospital care and antibiotic treatment from cases caused by viruses would be extremely helpful for hospitals.
We at Orion Diagnostica are grateful and happy that we can support this valuable study by providing tools for measuring CRP values of the children participating in the study.
